The Target Species At No Name Fly Lodge

Tarpon & Permit

At No Name Lodge, tarpon and permit are the stars of the show. These two species offer totally different challenges; and that’s exactly why we love them.

The Tarpon

Few fish on the planet deliver the raw power and visual thrill of a tarpon. From explosive eats to aerial mayhem, they’re a fly angler’s dream. Our fishery is rich with juveniles in the 10–40 lb range, as well some fish pushing the 100lb mark. Whether laid up in backwater lagoons or rolling through a channel, tarpon in Puerto Rico are aggressive, accessible, and reliably present throughout most of the year.

The Permit

Challenging, elusive, and undeniably addictive. Puerto Rican permit are the ultimate technical target. We hunt them across shallow flats and coral rubble edges, looking for subtle tails, nervous water, or that unmistakable flagging black tail. Everything has to come together just right to get the eat. And when it does? It’s the fish you’ll talk about for years.

Other Target Species

While tarpon and permit are our primary focus, there’s always the chance to encounter other species depending on tides, season, and location. These fish add variety to the day and keep things interesting when conditions shift.

Bonefish are rare on our side of the island due to decades of commercial netting, but they still exist in pockets. For anglers focused on bones, we’re happy to refer you to trusted guides in Culebra and on Puerto Rico’s east coast.

Snook love structure and dirty water, and when you find them, they hit like a truck. These ambush predators show up in backcountry lagoons, mangrove shorelines, and tidal creeks, especially after big rains.

Hard-hitting and great on the grill, snapper often show up around channel edges, rock piles, and drop-offs. They’re fun on a fly and a welcome change of pace when the tide slows or the wind kicks up.

Grouper aren’t common targets on fly, but they’re an exciting surprise when they show up. Most often hooked around deeper structure or while dredging near rocky ledges, they’re powerful fighters with serious pull.
